My Reviews
Some of our members that the book was a "hard read". They felt that the language sometimes got in the way of the story. We had a great discussion about the themes of the book: religion, class, memory. We also loved the way Waugh let Charles develop over the course of the novel.
Families are complicated and often troublesome. Anna Quindlen does a good job of illustrating how frustrating and rewarding these relationships can be. She also tells an interesting story involving the very rich and the very ordinary.
Most of our members enjoyed the book. They liked the author's ability to draw interesting characters and place them in dramatic situations that were historically relevant.
This book stimulated a lot of energetic conversation. We discussed the culture in Mississippi and racism in the South as a whole.
