My Reviews
I have enjoyed many books by this author but this one was a bit off track for me. The research on Galveston and the 1900 story was great but weaving the past to the present had a week and sometimes confusing transition.
This book was outstanding, kept me guessing right to the end. Mr. Grisham, your research skills are top notch. Just be aware that once you start reading this particular book you won't be able to stop, not even to go to work.
I would have enjoyed fewer characters with better development of each. A lot of research was done to prepare for this book. I would have enjoyed knowing more are fewer cultures. Transition from one event to another was convoluted and disconnected. Maybe if I had taken the medication they created in the book I would have been able to make a connection.
Great setting for a murder. The journey allowed me a tiny peak into the lives of spelunkers. Caving involves an incredible level of trust, leadership and dependence on others not easily enjoyed by most people.
30 years of writing and finally we have a female lead in this story. Still needs some development but overall spot on as the flavor of law enforcement is an urban area.
Story offers a glimpse into a world often unexplored. Life and survival is dependent on loyalty and connections to many unsavory humans. Subculture is dark and values guns, money and violence rather than intelligence. Language is a bit rough but the story is realistic.
