My Reviews
This is an excellent book, VERY funny. It started off a little slow for me, but after a chapter or two I was hook. I just had to find out what happened to Denis Cooverman. The book follows him over a 24 hour period, where he discovers which of his perceptions about the "perfect" Beth Cooper are true and which are not. I also LOVE the illustrations at the beginning of each chapter that show you Denis's current state. I laughed out loud and under my breath (in public places) many times while reading this book.
This book was great for discussion. We were able to compare and contrast the similarities and difference between our cultures. Plus we were able to discuss the controversy about the book. Did Debbie make stuff up? Did she exaggerate her role?
This book is not a pick for my book club at this time. It's possible I'll recommend it next year. This is a wonderful book. It was very informative. I had no idea such a thing had taken place in France. I will say the book did make me sad a lot of the time when the book went to Sarah's point of view. Loved the book. I would totally recommend it. There will be LOTS of things to discuss with this one.
It's a great book. Although it does contain a few graphic scenes that might be too much for some people. The road is ultimately a book about hope and survival. What would you do in a postapocalyptic world?
The book starts off mildly interesting and then it just gets really boring. All of the questions we found for book club all seemed to be the exact same question asked ten different ways or they talked about the narrative (seemed like high school English class questions). I would recommend just skipping this one.
It was a very interesting read. I did not know that HeLa cells existed. It's not just a boring science book. It's a book about the women behind the cells, her family, and the author's journey to find out about the cells and their affect on the family.
I thought this was an interesting book. It was an easy read. The suject matter is a little sad though. The dog, Enzo, is reflecting back at the end of his life. There are other sad things in the story too. I like how the book is written from Enzo's perspective. You get places where a human wouldn't. There are also a couple of really funny scenes in the book. There are making the book into a movie. I can't wait to see how it translates into a movie.
I liked this book. However, I was kind of hoping for a quirky, happy take on her ability. It was more of a gloomy take. It gets a little weird at the end, but there are some good discussion points that could be used.
I kept reading because I wanted to know what happened next. It's not really a happy book, but it's interesting. It's told from two different narrators, which is a good thing or we wouldn't have the whole story. The beach scene isn't what you would expect. Overall, I'd say it was a good book and I'm glad our club picked it.
This book has lots of good discussion jumping off points. It's a well written, fast, easy, insightful read.
A great book. I was really suprised. I was prepared to read a boring non-fiction book for book club. This is a really well written book. I really liked it. It is chronological, so it's really easy to follow. Some of their story seems a bit stretched, but it's NOT the whole story of what happened before, during, and after Katrina, it's the story of ONE family. Great read, LOTS of discussion potential.
