My Reviews
Alias Grace is a very powerful book that sparked a great discussion in our book club. The author creates a colorful heroine who is mysterious and the story remains somewhat of a mystery to the end. Women's rights, the prison system and the history of psychiatry are explored as the reader tries to figure out what happened to a young Canadian immigrant that would make her one of the most infamous women in Canada and the first to be labeled as a mureress.
As an animal lover, I found this book so interesting and was immediately caught up in the story. The twist at the end was so good I read it several times
I have rejected this book when brought up and I am not sure how people can get through it. I was so disturbed by the premise that I could not finish and in light of all the tragedies in the world currently couldn't justify any book about the murder of a young girl, no matter what context it was in or how it ended.
Stories come together and lives mix in a very exciting book that comes together in the very last pages and will keep you up wanting to know what really happened.
Reading this book made me feel like I had met a new friend. I found myself reading slower and slower at the end because I was so sad that I would have to finish. I have read it every 2 to 3 years and find it makes me laugh and cry every time I go back to read it.
Our book club had mixed reviews with half happy they read it and the other half happy to be done. It was too long and boring for me and I found that the I didn't like any of the characters very much and thus didn't really care what happened to any of them.
Your review of this book is actually about another book- I believe it is Dogs of babylon-
This book is about the creation of a synthetic virus that is meant to kill off all the undesirables in the world and the aftermath of what happens when it wipes out humankind. Very weird but good, as only Atwood can do. If you liked A Handmaid's tale you will likely get into this one also.
Set in Africa, this book was one of my favorites because of the different characters telling their stories. It will bring up many discussion points and is tragic and beautiful.
I thought this read too much like a Harlequin romance. I know the story but the detail was too much, the book was too long and I did not think the writing was worth all the attention it has been receiving lately.
Overall at the end of this book you will feel depressed but I would still recommend the book because it generates a lot of discussion. It is the age old story- man meets woman and he falls in love but has the small issue of his wife. He is torn by two women- very different- and it gets to the question of what true love is.
I loved this story about the plague because it brought up how differently the world saw disasters back in the 1600's. People were terrified of witches and evil spirits and not knowing how disease passed created a great background for this book. It seems like you are there and it has a shocking ending that will certainly leave a group talking. Everyone I have given this to read has loved it.
