My Reviews
A story of a headstrong girl who pursues her dream of becoming a surgeon and overcoming the prejudices against women in medicine in the time of Lincoln, at the price of almost losing her entire family. Several love stories are brilliantly woven into the story, and the historical detail is right on. A bit graphic in describing the primitive medical practices of the time. I highly recommend.
Wonderful story but felt the book was too long, and slow at times.
It had a wonderful introduction, but my interest waned soon thereafter. The authors did a lot of research, but it was not presented well. It read like a text book.
Slow starter. Good story, but didn\\\'t care for the \\\"fairy tale\\\" aspect. Also thought the ending was not very realistic.
The story line had a lot of potential, but the author failed to deliver.
I thought the author brilliantly incorporated a large group of complicated characters. The story line kept one guessing the final outcome. The writing was wonderfully descriptive; one could almost feel the wind blow on Janus. I highly recommend this book.
I knew very little about Iceland, so appreciated what I learned from reading the book. Agnes\\\'s story was very depressing and hopeless, giving a vivid description of family life, or lack thereof. However, I felt the story was painfully slow and mundane, not a topic I would have chosen.
This is a story of a very dysfunctional family and how that dysfunction ruled their lives . After a slow start, the author was very informative about the Somali influx into a small town in Maine, and how it impacted its citizens.
Fascinating info, massive amount of detail, however I felt that the "girls" were lost in all the technical jargon. I expected more of a biography of their lives. The few pictures and bits of info at the end weren't enough.
Way too long. Inaccurate time references. Did not like the alcohol and drug related activities.
A very funny story about a serious condition. Very informative about the Asperger's affliction. , from those affected to those who deal with them. Easy and fun reading.
This is a story about the servants in the house of Longbourne, takes place in England in Napoleanic times. It describes, in detail, their private & working lives, their trials and happier times. Well written and convincing historical fiction.
Story of an aging novelist who enlists a young writer to tell the story of her mysterious life. I found the book totally unbelievable. Way too many plots and sub plots that didn't seem to go anywhere. Painfully slow at first. Frustrating to the point of disturbing.
Story of a man who worked his entire lifetime to amass a fabulous fortune, being one of the richest men in the country. Most of the book deals with how that fortune was spent, and in some cases, misspent when it was controlled by his reclusive daughter. Well researched and contains many accurate historical facts.
The government funded a trip for mothers or wives of fallen soldiers after WWI to visit the graves of their sons in Europe. The story tells about five women's experiences before, during and after the trip. Touching story with many "side trips".
Title is misleading. The "altered state" is briefly mentioned in the very last part of the book. Unremarkable content did not hold my interest.
A memoir by a girl, about her bi-sexual father who raised her by himself after the death of his wife when the girl was 2 years old. His letters to her are the basis of her info. I felt it was an un-convincing story that went "no place".
Co-written by four authors, four stories about four different women, all living in the same small Vermont town. All stories had a similar format, sweet feel-good endings, with religious overtones. light and easy reading. All of the women referred to a very old book in trying to find a suitable husband.
Don't waste your time reading this pointless story of a tea shop operator investigating a winery murder.
Amanda discovers she is one of twins born to a very wealthy mother after years of living with her dysfunctional adoptive parents. Her birth mother is found murdered and much confusion follows finding the murderer. Amanda inherits a huge inheritance and a wealth of extended family of unconvincing characters, none of whom are likable. Violence and sex do not improve this poorly written story.
