My Reviews
A series mystery can be difficult to discuss if the members haven't read other books by the author. You could have a discussion if you focused on the Jewish aspects of the characters lives but it was not a great discussion book for our group.
Everyone seemed to like Ursula, under. Some liked the historical parts, others the contemporary story. We talked about mixed marriages, life after Sept. 11, precocious children. Some thoughts were that the women were heroines but most people had a bad end--which felt realistic due to the time in which they lived. Marjaata was a favorite. Rather long, but the author is covering a lot of time.
Mary Shelley had a fascinating life, and Frankenstein was her first novel. Written in the dense, descriptive language of the time, 1818, Shelley explores the ideas of nature vs. nurture, scientific responsibility, societal prejudices and extreme ambition. Thought-provoking, and interesting, Frankenstein is a book nothing like the film we have all seen. A discussion could be held on why that is.
This is a good book and it generated quite a bit of discussion about Einstein the man and the science involved. The science passages were difficult to understand and visualize so most people just skipped ahead of these parts. I liked learning about his life and I was able to grasp a bit of the science. He lived in very interesting times.
