My Reviews
I really enjoyed the book. P.D.James is an really great mystery writer and she kept to Jane Austin\'s language and tradition in her writing. It was a fun combination and easy to read.
I really enjoyed this read. I knew very little about the personal lives of the American artists and writers in Europe at that time. Now that I have read about Hemingway\\\'s personal life and first marriage, his early works make more sense.
The author describes her Somali background and culture with quotes from the Quran which utterly repress women and children. Her escape to Holland and commitment to exposing the harm being done to women and girl children in the practice of Islam is dramatic. Fortunately, not all Muslims interpret the Quran as she experienced. But the book made me think about that unique place where religion and culture intersect for harm or for good.
This is an unusual premise: a white supremacist walks into the office of a human rights organization headed by a Holocaust survivor and tells them, \\\"I want to help you guys save guys like me from becoming guys like me.\\\" It is a story of trust, learning to live a larger life than most of us are given, but it also tells of the costs to relationships, family, for the people doing this work.
It\'s a good story.
Jim Fergus writes in the voice of women and so convincingly, that I was sure this was a true memoir, and not fiction. The history and geography of the West was so well researched and the story is well told, and the premise for the book is based on an actual historical event.
Gladwell\\\'s approach to exploration of issues related to meeting the \\\"big guy\\\" was an interesting read for me.
This is my second reading of Dakota, many years after the first read. Kathleen Norris describes western Dakota near where I grew up , but on the Montana side. Reading it, I felt as if Norris had gotten inside my head and described the culture of my youth. She uses humor in her writing, which is beautiful and poetic.
