My Reviews
this book lends itself well to a book club. it is thought provoking and well written; the characters seem real and the imagery was very vivid. I could very clearly picture the people and places almost as if it was a movie, which I'm sure it will be. It was, though a very sad book.
I loved this book. It was challenging but so incredibly well written and interesting.
I adored this book- it was truly one of my top picks of the year. Beautifully written and fascinating characters that stayed with me for a long time after I'd finished it.
Hard to believe this isn't fiction. Well written account of the Chicago Worlds Fair and a serial killer. This was the beginning of my love affair with Erik Larson- he has yet to disappoint me!
I loved this book- loved, loved, loved! It does deal with sensitive issues and may not be appropriate for all book clubs but I thought it was beautifully written; sad, hopeful, wonderful and real.
Because I love Ann Lamott- I mean I think she is brilliant and funny and real and I really want to sit and have coffee with her and talk for hours about God and Jesus and how we all need to be a little bit kinder to others (and ourselves). Having said that- this could be a tough sell for a book club. If your a traditional Christian you are likely to be offended by her and if your not a Jesus follower you probably think she's a little nutty. For those of us who are a little nutty like her this is the most lovely gift of a book. In fact, I've gifted this book close to a dozen times.... so read it! But maybe not in your book club.
I think this is one of those books that looks like very light chick lit but underneath the surface are some very thought provoking questions. If I woke up and had lost the last 10 years of my life would I recognize who I had become? Would I like her? Great book- I didn't read it for a book club but hoping our group will choose it this year- I think it could make for a fascinating discussion.
this is a fascinating look at the world of top restaurants and food critics in NYC but it is so much more! As Ruth dons her disguises she finds she becomes the character and it proves to be incredibly insightful. This book made me want to go to New York and find that fabulous sushi place!
this is one of those books that is just sweet and thought provoking. you can recommend it to your grandmother or your neighbor without fear that they might be offended.
This book was compelling; I really could not put it down once I started it. While the subject matter was dark, the book was so well written and the characters so vivid I was in that place a friend once described as a "book coma"- where you literally are unable to do anything but read until the bitter end.
this is one of those books that just makes you smile. There were a few of us in book club that found it a bit unrealistic and tied up all neat and too tidy at the end but most agreed it was just a fun, well written book that made us all happy. And all of us with daughters thought Jeanne Ray's description of Camille was uncomfortably spot on!
This book is beautiful and thought provoking... it's hard to believe Ann Morrow Lindbergh didn't finish typing this on her mac. The issues she writes about are timeless ones. This would not, perhaps be a first choice for my book club- although with a small intimate group of friends it could be a great choice
I just finished reading Guests on Earth and literally could not put it down. As usual, Lee Smith drew me in with characters I instantly cared about and a story that was interesting and well written. The historical facts relating to both Zelda Fitzgerald and the treatment of the mentally ill were fascinating and the setting in one of my favorite places only added to my interest and enjoyment of this novel.
This is another great offering from a writer I really enjoy. I have to say I didn't love it quite as much as What Alice Forgot or her new one Big Little Lies... still a very compelling read.
I couldn't put this book down... I loved the drama of it and while it has been compared to Gone Girl, I actually enjoyed it more.
My book club read this a couple of months ago and we all felt incredibly nostalgic about it. It really did bring us back to a time of small towns, neighbors who knew you and your family and the ways we were brought up (we are aged 50-60)... well written, lovely and ultimately hopeful.
