My Reviews

The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield

Dramatic, Interesting, Dark
Famous author (fictional) is interviewed for her biography and this "13th tale" reveals ghosts of all kinds from her past, and that of her interviewer.

This book was really fun to read! The writing style was rich and vivid, and the complexity of the characters as well as mystery elements made it hard to put down. It had an old-world quality to it, with references to Jane Eyre of which it had a similar feel. I would give this book the highest rating.

A fictional book of intertwining characters as interviewed by one man, the author. All have tales of love, and each tale describes a different type or aspect of love.

This book was not as gripping a page turner as some of the other books we've read. Many in our group (like me) kept putting it down and had trouble picking it up again. It could be a bit deep in parts, but given a chance, had many great pearls of wisdom and insights on love and relationships. It was a fun book to discuss in a book club, and we were all glad we'd read it.

Interesting, Graphic, Informative
A woman describes the events of her life all centering around her complex father, a businessman. The book takes us back and forth from Shanghai to Los Angeles between the 1940s to the 1980's

Excellent book I would recommend to everyone. It is a historical novel filled with complex characters and detailed locations. I felt I was reading a black and white movie from the 40's...although much of it takes place in Shanghai it is very American in point of view. It breezes along, never bogged down and will make you smile and cry.

Wild Swans by Jung Chang

Informative, Epic, Difficult
The author describes an account of her, her mother's and her grandmother's lives in China. This historical account includes customs, family dynamics and the political climates of the three generation

If you're looking for a challenging read...this book is for you. Long and packed with details (although not difficult vocabulary), it can take some time to get through, but it is one of the most educational books I've read in a long time.

At a couple of points I had to put it down for a week or so, because the content was, let's face it, depressing. But once I picked it back up, I became so engrossed I could hardly put it down. I found myself going on Google to look up bits and pieces of history that the author described, in order to learn more. It was so compelling that it seemed almost unbelievable at times, but I learned that her account is probably very accurate.

I highly recommend it for a book club, because there is so much to discuss. Our group realized we knew very little about China and the book really piqued our interest. It also made us extremely grateful to have been raised in the USA.
