My Reviews

Still Missing: A Novel by Chevy Stevens

Dramatic, Dark, Graphic
Half good, half not-so-good

The first part of "Still Missing" is interesting, seeing how one person reacts to being held captive by a lunatic. Also, the narrative device of a person talking to a psychologist is effective and interesting. However, the resolution of the mystery in the last part of the book is unsatisfying because it's just too unlikely to believe it, given what we know about the person who turns out to be the mastermind of the abduction. Read it, yes, but there are better books for book clubs.

Interesting but sad

The story of life as the sole inhabitants of an Australian barrier island, maintaining and operating the lighthouse, in the 1920's, is very interesting and unlike anything I've read before. The main plot line is, ultimately, pretty sad, though it has moments of great joy--as it turns out, happiness stolen at someone else's expense. I don't think this is a must-read book, but I'm glad I read it and everyone in our book club enjoyed it.

A fun, poignant satire

This book is best for people who appreciate satire. In fact, it's hard for me to imagine you would enjoy it otherwise. It directly satirizes the Microsoft employee and Seattle upper middle class mentalities, and also takes a shot at East coast private schools, interventions, and more--all of which is quite humorous. I was also intrigued by the growth of the characters in this book and by the fresh look at how minor mental health issues can become major problems for an individual, her family, and her friends.
