My Reviews
Kate Atkinson is a fabulous writer, and this is one of her best. A novel that spans the world wars in England, it conveys the complex impact the upheaval had on both soldiers and those at home. Beautifully conceived and executed, it's eminently worthy of discussion!
Interesting topic - the orphan trains were not something about which I was aware. But the primary plot coincidence is a bit "much" - contrived and unconvincing. Still - it was an easy read...maybe better for a teen audience.
This little gem has just been republished and thank heavens! Salmon fishing in rural Ireland and the confessions of an elderly parishioner are just the framework of a touching, sweet, and truly beautiful little story about relationships and the nature of love - and friendship. Savor every moment of its reading and submerge yourself in the world so beautifully created by the author.
