Most members said that they wouldn't have picked up this book if not for book club. Although some members had difficulty with the time travel not being consistent, all thought the book was very interesting to read and acknowledged the author's difficult task of writing the novel.
This book was a little too predictable and had the old boy gets girl, loses girl, gets girl back. However, the historical part of the novel was very interesting. I feel I understand Chinese culture much better now and their views on death and the afterworld. Our group enjoyed the book, but I was the only one whom had read Snow Flower. I would highly recommend Snow Flower and the Secret Fan.
Most of our group enjoyed this fast-pasted novel. It's a mystery with an ending that surprised all but one of our members. Interesting discussions about homeless and psychotic behavior during our meeting.
This was one of my favorite book club reads. It's so nice to read a classic for a change of pace. This book has a strong female character that was uncharacteristic for women during that time period. I hadn't seen the movie, which made it more enjoyable for me.
