My Reviews
A fun read - lots of twists and turns. A great first book for our club to get into the swing of things... not too heavy but generates a fair bit of discussion due to interesting characters.
This book was a challenge for some of our members to get through as it was so full - full of information, of amazing charactors, emotion, history.... it was a force! Everybody loved it though. Would recommend to those "serious" groups out there who have plenty of time to read. It is an amazing book.
Wow - this book provoked our best discussion yet - with so many different theory\'s and viewpoints. It had everyone guessing the whole way through and then made you want to turn back to the beginning and start all over again. For 150 pages, this book is so well written - a story beneath the story... untold, but entwined between the lines. Just amazing.
Although this book is fairly depressing to read, it is still filled with insight and at times is laugh out loud funny. The characters are very well drawn and interesting, and it is impossible not to find a soft spot in your heart for Holden Caulfield. It is a quirky little book, but I am so glad that I have read it.
I had heard such good reports about this book, but I just couldn't get into it. I found the substance to be good, but the dying and reliving constantly got a bit tedious and ruined the flow of the book for me. There were a couple of great parts, don't get me wrong, but it could have been so much better had it been written in a different style.
There were mixed opinions of this book amongst our bookclub members. Personally I loved this book - it was a wonderful book to read on holiday as it flowed with such beautiful, poetic language and was a joy to read.
The entire group gave this book 7/10. It is like a number of short stories all "loosely" pulled together by one event. Each short story is wonderful and well written, just the flow between is a little clunky.
This was one book that was a joy to pick up and read - it transported you into another world and left you with little pearls of wisdom along the way. The whole group thought this book was a winner!
I loved this book - it was fast-paced, had great characters, lots of twists and turns, and kept you guessing all of the way through. Not everyone in our bookclub felt the same about this book though... opinions were split down the middle.
I think the articles in this book are interesting, and would be good to read in the original column that they were intended for. Unfortunately when all grouped together into a book it didn\\\'t work for me at all and found myself skimming to get it finished. One or 2 of the columns hit home and were moving, but the rest not so much.
This is the best book I have read for a while - it swept me away and I didn't want to put it down. It grabbed you and held on until the last dramatic pages. Beautiful book!
This was such a unique story - beautiful lovable characters, interesting history, and a touching love story all wrapped up in one. Very enjoyable to read.
We had one of our best discussions yet with this book at out bookclub meeting. It is an easy book to read but so interesting and full of history about a forgotten time.
Fascinating story - but frustrating at times and a bit drawn out.
Ove is a unique book... it makes you laugh and cry all in the one sentence. It's chock full of inspiring quotes that will move you. Our entire book club loved this one.
This book was a quick interesting read which bought with it great discussion from the group and dramatically different views of the events in the book. It is a very different read so keep an open mind.
This book shows you another side of the war in such a poetic but gruesome way. The love story that is intertwined is a welcome relief from the horror at the core of the story.
This book of short stories was so different from anything else any of us had ever read - there were mixed reviews, but overall everyone is glad that they read it. Personally I found the stories fascinating and each one left me wanting to know more. The last story had us all completely baffled.
We all enjoyed this book. It stays with you well after you have turned the last page.
This is a beautiful book to read. Many books within a book - and some wonderful insights. Recommended.
I personally didn't like this book - I found the writing to be hard to connect with. I know it was from a child's perspective and the simplicity was important in getting the message of the book across. But I found it a slog to get through it and I found it a bit one-dimensional. A lot of our bookclub did like this book though, and it does stay with you for a long time long after reading it.
This is a challenging read - a real slog - but an incredible, epic, perfect novel once you get through it to the end. John Irving is a genius.
I loved this book. The characters, the humour, the writing - it flowed so beautifully. Such a joy to read. Great story.
This book was very easy to read - a mixture of darkness and the beauty of the flowers... and a little bit of magic thrown in. A great read and made for good discussion.
This book may not have received a high score from our bookclub, but we are all glad that we read it and it made for very good discussion. It sends a very important message.
This was a great book to read - very quick and fun and keeps you guessing. Likable characters (even if they are all flawed). Interesting discussion in the group. We all liked it
We had a wonderful discussion around this book - we all agreed it could have been shorter without losing any of it's magic. The story was honest and believable.. a love story that is messy and gritty. A great read.
This is a really quick read - and very unique. We had an excellent discussion on this one!
This book was like a breath of fresh air... it was so simple but beautifully written and a joy to read. Some of our book club struggled with it though - it is a classic.
This book was beautifully written and enjoyable to read. Great insights into marriage and leaves you thinking about your own.
