Abide with Me: A Novel by Elizabeth Strout

Slow, Inspiring, Insightful
Widowed minister moves to small town, while he's raising daughter

This book was a little slow in the beginning, but once I got into it, it went quickly. It was well-written. The main character is a minister who was widowed at a young age. His deceased wife was outgoing and not conservative.

Much of the story has to do with the minister's daughter, who he is raising on his own. She is quiet and withdrawn. I did not particularly care for either character, but still enjoyed the book overall.

Informative, Dramatic, Interesting
Growing up as a woman in China during the nineteenth century

I particularly enjoy Chinese books, so I found the entire book very interesting. It explains the culture for women during that time period. The book was slow to start, but went fast after the first couple chapters. I found the foot-binding to be fascinating.

I probably would not read the book again, but it was definitely one of the better books I have read this year.
