This book provided a different perspective of Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln and we learned some incites into his presidency! It was well writen.
A historical perspective of how freepeople of color were affected by the Civil War and emancipation. My love for Abraham Lincoln grew from the perspective of Mrs. Elizabeth Keckley.
The book was interesting and gave me information I didn\\\\\\\'t know before. But it was rather slow moving and, not being a history buff, I didn\\\\\\\'t need all the information about the war, generals, battles, etc.
This book is historical fiction, highly researched, which puts the spotlight on Mary Todd Lincoln and the services rendered to her by her \\\\\\\\\\\\\\\"modiste\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\" (dressmaker and dresser) during and after the Civil War. Having purchased her and her son\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s way out of slavery, Elizabeth Keckley finds herself sewing for the wives of future rebel leaders but eventually is selected by Mrs. Lincoln as her dressmaker. Mrs. Lincoln\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s rages and depressions fall heavily on the care of Mrs. Keckley who goes above and beyond the call of duty to be a friend to the President\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\'s wife. This book incorporates history but takes place mainly behind the scenes of great incidents. A very readable book.
Enjoyed seeing the personal side of life and times including President and Mrs. Lincoln
Learned new things about Pres. Lincoln\\\'s wife Mary and her seamstress Elizabeth.
Interesting insights into Mary Todd Lincoln's difficult personality. Also an interesting character study of the former slave, Elizabeth, an unusually intelligent, humane and honorable woman, and what life was like in the White House in the 1860s.
Even though it was a historical fiction it did have some historical facts in the book. I felt it was a good beginning to reading about Mary Todd Lincoln and her relationship with Elizabeth Keckley her dressmaker.
Full of factual information and sort of interesting but also overly dry and boring in parts.
it is good as a text book - after reading reviews it is very much copied from another book, read the original. i dont feel the author added anything...
Great background information on the Civil War, slavery, and the Lincolnshire. And the true story of an amazing black woman of that time.
I appreciated learning the details of that era but the characters were flat and one dimensional. I was expecting more insight into Elizabeth Keckley. There just was no emotion and was was a very slow read.
Read this only if you are really curious about Mrs. Lincoln. The story of the dressmaker is shallow and I didn't feel any true emotion for her - it felt like she was just there to give a reason for a story about Mrs. Lincoln. The info on the president and the war was brief and I didn't get much depth on it.
If u like historic fiction, this is for you. Almost too detailed. The dressmaker's loyalty quality is almost too good to be true. Provides new perspectives on the assassination of President Lincoln. Had read some of the other clubs' reviews and we had more + things to say than previously written.
