Very interesting book. Thought-provoking. While an anonymous process selected the winning submission, the unfortunate reality of ignorance, intolerance and predujices prevailed. Many issues to examine. Excellent selection for a book club as we reflect on the 10th Anniversary of September 11th. Well-written.
Interesting story line. Good book for book club discussions.
Sink your teeth into this story and stay with it until the end. It's worth it. Excellent for book discussions.
Not everyone in the bookclub will agree on what the right decision should be for the memorial. The writing was very good and I would read more books when she writes them.
I really enjoyed the book and how complicated and frustrating all the main characters were
Our group liked the book but felt the author lost her way about two thirds of the wy through the novel. While the plot was a good idea, it didn't seem as if the author developed it fully.
I loved the way the book portrayed all the issues, but didn't bring them to conclusion. You really had to think about how you felt about each and every issue it raised.
I found this book dry but most of the book club members liked it. We agreed that it was an excellent text for discussion.
Our book club had one of the liveliest discussions in quite some time and this book was not uniformly liked. We had some members who loved it, others who hated it, and most who gave it 3.5 out of 5 stars. Despite that, the discussion was great and for that reason I would recommend it to other book clubs.
This author loved words...lots and lots of words...especially SAT words! She slowed down after the first few chapters but I found her story conflicting. She didn't seem to know which side of the argument she was on and I was surprised when the main character caved into others opinions. The story also jumped forward quite a bit and made me question what had happened in the ensuing years that were skipped.
The book is full of layers of discussion. One question that came back to me is what is an American - defined by race, creed or the length that you live in the United States? How do we handle adversity? When do we come together as one voice? Until you walk in their shoes we will not know and there where a lot of shoes to walk in with this book.
I read the book rather quickly because the story was interesting and the characters were even more so.
