"Ethan Frome by Edith Wharton" by Madam Secretary (see profile) 05/01/12

This classic was a terrific book for discussion about the characters and what drives them. While I didn't thoroughly enjoy reading the book, other members' insights brought many things to light. We were able to have extensive conversations about the relationships among the characters and what led them to their decisions.

Ethan frome was a man who took care of people all his life. First his parents then his wife. He was a quiet man who seemed to live a sad life. He had hopes and dreams but always put them aside so he could take care of others. Why really did he not act on his dreams? Was he using taking care of others as an excuse. I wanted him to be stronger and do something ! I read this book many times and each time came away from it with a new thought. I got angry with each of the three main characters at different times.. I watched the movie a few times and it is very close to the book. My book group visited THE MOUNT in Lenox Ma the home Edith Wharton built. We all loved the book..
