Our club found this book very interesting and different from most of the books we've read.
I wasn't a big fan of this book, nor was anyone in our bookclub. We found the 'magical realism' to be less than magical or realistic. The story didn't make much sense and didn't have much of a point. The writing style was more like that of a middle school writing contest with lots of 'oh, and by the way I forgot to tell you that blah blah blah happened two chapters ago. You need that information now". Not a fan, wouldn't recommend.
The book is set up in 12 month chapters. Chapter one is where Tita's life begins, and chapter 12 is where she passes her traditions to the next generation. Reading it at night could cause weight gain, since it is food-descriptive :)
I didn't get the point/message. I was 6 chapters in before I realized the main protagonist was under 18yrs old. I'm not that insightful.
