Elaine Bartlett was by no means innocent of the crime she was accused of committing. She agreed to be a part of a drug deal because she didn't think she'd be caught, she thought, "just this one time I'll have $2,500. to pay my bills and do something for my family." As the saying goes, it only takes one time. That one time cost her sixteen years of her life and valuable time with her family.
The justice system took advantage of her naievete and made her another sad statistic, this time being a young black female imprisoned for a first offense of being in possession of illegal drugs. She used her time of incarceration to gain skills, an education, encourage others and finally seek her freedom. It is sad to say that her story is not unusal. This book shares with the reader what it's like for people who have been released from prison. It gives a clear picture of just how difficult it is to return to society, gain employment, stay out of trouble and live a peaceful law-abiding life. It also paints a vivid image of imprisonment on family members. Elaine Bartlett made a foolish mistake that cost her many of her young years. Perhaps knowing her story will help another individual see that the consequences are too costly and not worth the "fast money".
