We just had our book club meeting for this book. We all liked it. It is very long, and has many interesting characters. It is written in the vernacular ("local speak") of a small southern town in Cold Sassy, Georgia in 1906. It is told from the point of view of a 14 year old boy that lives there. It is at times humorous, and at times tragic. My grandmother was from the south, and a lot of the sayings made me laugh because they were some of the things she used to say. If you enjoy period pieces, this one is great for discussion.
This was a good discussion book as our group loved the characters. Especially the Grandpa and the grandson. Some had a problem with Miss Love, but without her the book would have been a little lifeless. All in all we enjoyed this book.
A story of family, love, romance and reconciliation. Made a very good discussion book.
Gives excellent description of small town life in 1906 USA south from perspective of well-to-do white family. Also a love story but in an unexpected way. Takes a while to get used to the lingo of the era/place.
Charming escape.
