A good book with everything; laughter, tears, shock and horror. But zombies always make for a good discussion, especially when it concerns Christmas. Christopher Moore's books would be fun for any goup. The way that man's mind works is amazing.
Only one word needed to describe this book - barking! I am a bit of a baa humbug so it was courageous of the book club to give me the choice of our first christmas read. No Christmas Carol for us - I thought I would pick something a bit different and I certainly succeeded - Murder and Zombies are not your usual christmas fayre. Saying that, I like Chris Moore's light-hearted if somewhat weird writing style and imagination. Don't overanalyse this one. Enjoy it, share a glass of mulled wine and mince pie with your book club buddies and enjoy the range of views it will elicit.
Christopher Moore is brilliant! Those of you familiar with his work will recognize some of your old favorite characters (including Roberto) and enjoy this fun frolic in Pine Cove! No sappy, Christmas stories here as the gang deals with angel trying to give a Christmas miracle to a young boy who witnessed Santa being murdered.
Fair warning, if you are looking for a touching and heartwarming Christmas story then you might want to skip this one. However, if your book club is looking for something to read in December that is not the usual sentimental mush, then you might want to consider Moore's latest Pine Cove adventure. The novel was very funny and made some interesting points about the way that most people in this country celebrate Christmas (at least through most of it). It was well written and the characters (though not at all typical) were very fun. However, the ending was weak. I don't want to give too much away, but once the story got to the finale it lost me. I personally did not care for anything from the moment the angel grants the child's wish on, but a friend of mine only had a problem with the very last chapter. All and all though, a very entertaining book.
This is not your typical Christmas story. It's humorous, ridiculous, and extremely graphic. We're talking zombies killing people and eating their brains. Was definitely not my taste, but made for a lively discussion at book club.
