"Disappointed but would recommend to discuss" by castellj (see profile) 02/12/20

Tough one to review because the subject leads to interesting discussions. Yet, the characters lacked development, although one can say maybe there personality flaws lay their fate. It felt as no one learned anything and controversial issues about human rights were brushed aside. If it had been a dystopic, future novel that may have worked but in present day, not so much to my taste.

"Different topic" by LSakay (see profile) 04/15/20

Hmmm. I liked this tale of how surrogacy gets "farmed" out and becomes a corporate endeavor - really seems so likely as we move forward generationally. I sensed Mae's ambivalence at times throughout the story as a corporate leader in this organization yet her actions at the end of the story seemed out of character and like a forced, happy ending (I hated that). The writing was a bit bland for me too. However, the ethical dilemmas and cultural biases Ramos highlights in this story did not go unnoticed. I appreciated that. The tense and complicated relationship between Jane and her cousin, Ate, was poignant and touching and the insertion of WASPY Reagan also added a different, challenging perspective to this mix of intelligent ladies from different backgrounds. The Farm was a actually less heavy read than I expected it to be and had a light-hearted air about it yet it did touch on current controversial topics such as birthing rights, womanhood, and minorities in the US. This theme does generate introspective thought about one's morals, expectations, and personal goals as they interact with motherhood, career drive, and social class. A woman's life...it ain't so simple.
