"Would I read this book again?" Yes, and I will keep it on my shelf to remind me to share it with others. As a new Florida resident, Mr. Smith's book provided me with an understanding of the people who migrated and lived in central Florida.
What a great read! The pioneering spirit of the MacIvey family matches those of other early settlers throughout our nation, but Patrick Smith's telling of their story is brilliant. What a page turner. I was totally caught up in the emotion of their stuggle to survive adversity.
An outstanding Florida historical novel. A stoy of three generations of the MacIvey family, from dirt poor Crackers to wealthy real estate tycoons. a gripping tale that holds your interest from start to finish. The characters come to life in this well researched book. A winner.
If you want to understand Florida, you must read this book!
This is a great book, a must read for Floridians but a story that everyone will love. Great characters that will feel like family to you, great adventures that will feel like you are there. What a fantastic story and a fantastic writer. I didn't want it to end!
Patrick Smith brought me back to a time in Florida that living was difficult for all humans. These sturdy implants endured freezes, snakes, rogue military, hardship all for the sake of family. They brought indians and blacks into their family as well as horses and dogs. This is a must read for both crackers and snow birds alike!
An absolutely fabulous read while spending the winter in FL! I'll look for more books by Patrick Smith ASAP. He's now one of my favorite authors!
Required reading in many Florida schools, this book chronicles a family in Florida from the 1800's forward, focusing mainly on early Florida. It is a wonderful novel with believable characters and description of life in this frontier land.
Good to know the history of some of the places I have visited in Florida and also to have some more information about those places that don't exist anymore. Shows some of the true pioneer spirit that settled this country.
Really good historical fiction especially for Florida reading groups who can relate to the story.
Everyone should know the history of the state that they live in, that being said, A Land remembered is a work of fiction but is historically accurate. These characters were tough, I can't even imagine living in Florida without air conditioning! The bugs, prehistoric creatures in fresh water and an unforgiving terrain, you had to be tough and determined. A land remembered is a really good book that will make you appreciate all that you have.
Packed full of adventure and tragedy. A wonderful look into what old Florida used to be like before people and development arrived.
Recommend for Floridians, especially newcomers. Educational
Our club rated it a 3.3. We are all new to this region of Florida and found it informative geographically and interesting. Poorly written, without accurate historical details, nor any character depth. Our club liked the geographic picture in the 1900's.
