It's hard to find nonfiction that works in a book club as well as fiction does, but Why We Read What We Read is the PERFECT book for great discussions. The authors analyze 200 of the top bestsellers from the past 16 years and reveal what their common themes reveal about our American psyche. Not only that, the book is hilarious! They cover self-help, diet, business, inspiration, mysteries, thrillers, horror, politics, romance, religion, and literary fiction and nonfiction. You probably won't agree with the authors on everything, but that's part of the fun.
This book would be fascinating to any book lover, especially to book club members who have read some of the books that the authors review. Since my book club does only literary fiction, I had no idea so many people were reading self-help books and romance novels and religious books! It was really eye-opening, and the authors make it funny so it's not just a list of the top books. My club especially talked about the literary fiction section and what the authors say about female reading and book clubs. My club had never really talked before about how important we are to each other and this book brought out a really touching conversation. That's why it's one of my top picks.
