I am from the city where most of the "on shore” portion of this story takes place and it's amazing how connected I feel to Leslie's story. There are so many references I recognized, that it made for a very intimate read for me. But much of the story takes place at sea, and the book definitely kept me intrigued throughout. In this story the father makes such a risky decision to take 3 young girls across the ocean, that is seems unbelievable. Could this story happen only 30 or so years later? I don’t think so. This story also touches on a topic not a lot of women don't discuss, sexual abuse. I'm not sure what I'm more proud of the author for; learning the art of sailing at such a young age and saving her family, or speaking up and giving women who are victim of sexual abuse a voice. It makes me happy to see so many positive reviews. I really enjoyed this story and am looking forward to reading other books from this author.
I liked this book. It flowed very nicely. I'm a very hard to please reader; you have to catch me in the first 5-pages... Fourteen did that. I'm grateful that I was told about this book by our book club. I'm hoping that there will be a conclusion book. I'm wondering what happened after the journey.
Beautifully written, coming of age memoir. The author writes about her adventures sailing, her struggles, and growing up in a dysfunctional family. It is such a beautiful and relatable story. Everyone will find something to enjoy about this story.
