Zappa creates a fictional monster world that feels similar to the one in Where the Wild Things Are but a little darker. Is an easy read that would probably be enjoyable for children but is not a book club selection. At times it does feel as though the author is trying too hard to be creative rather than letting the story tell itself. The book is a visual treat, however, with wonderful graphics and pictures throughout.
This book is not one that should be used for book discussion. Although it's an entertaining read, adults would find it difficult to come up with themes and deeper meanings to discuss. It is, in fact, more of a children's book. The book itself is aesthetically pleasing - the binding and the pictures are beautifully done. The dialogue isn't fabulous - especially when it is the father speaking. But the narration (done from the daughter's point of view) is well-done and funny. I suggest reading it with your child (ages 6-10 maybe).
I haven't read this yet, but my 9-year-old read it and absolutely loved it. In fact, at today he is giving a demonstration in class on one of the recipes from the book. It is a recipe for monster repellent using a lemon, a stick of butter, 20 inches of red string, and his bare hands. He is really looking forward to trying it out for the class and telling them all about the book. He also loved the names of the people and the places in the book. Good 9-year-old humor.
