Our book club enjoyed this book. Compliments were paid to the unique angle presented with a focus on the cabinet, the depth of differentiated research (much of it coming from women's letters), the balanced portrayal of Mary Lincoln, and the author's ability to bring Abe to life (so many enlightening moments about him!).
You think you know something about Lincoln, but when you start reading this book, you realize that there is sooo much you don't know about him. It was very very interesting, even if you aren't a history buff.
This book is a wonderful history book and very informative. It is one that I will keep on the shelf to read over and for the kids to read when they are older however, it really didn't suit us as a book for book club.
I learned so much about Lincoln in this book. Our group took two months for this read, I would add another month as it is an in depth book. I have a lot more respect for Lincoln and how he actually changed the world with his vision of one nation. Powerful read. The people he chose for his cabinet, many his rivals, was ingenious. I keep thinking how different our country would be today as far as race relations go if Lincoln had been able to bring his expertise into the effects of emancipation.
