Good book: simple plot made fun with the bonus of a feel-good ending. I particularly liked the characters (all quirky in their own way) and their respect for each other.
I completely enjoyed this book! It is a modern book with deep roots in medieval type-setting and publishing! The author\\\'s obvious love of books is infectious to those of us who share the same obsession! I recommend buying this book in hardcover as there\\\'s some \\\"magic\\\" in the cover! The author embraces technology and how quickly our reading habits are changing! Without giving it away, I found the solution to the mystery very satisfying.
Fun to read!! Intriguing concept and storyline.
Thoroughly enjoyed reading this book! Kept me interested in the outcome and constantly wondering and speculating the next step.
I really enjoyed this book. I wish I could have given the book 4 1/2 stars (this site only gives you the choice of 4 or 5 stars). Everyone in our book club enjoyed the book very much. We only found a few very minor problems with the story. We all felt the author left some of the characters situations unanswered. These were just very minor observations from the group, so everyone agreed that it was a really good choice and a very satisfying read.
It was a lot of fun to read and really enjoyed it. Was a good book for a book club - we talked about it a lot.
If you\\\\\\\'re a computer geek, you will love this novel! Just amazing how Robin Sloan thought some of this stuff up! A lot of it was above my head. Some liked it, some didn\\\\\\\'t, but it inspired a lot of discussion, more than usual!
I am at a loss for words. The best I have read so far this year. All I can say is to read this! Put it at the top of your list. I have to buy it for my own library!
The ratings for our group ranged from a 2 to a 5, most rating it in the middle. Someone described it as being a bit \"rabbit-down-the-hole\" like, a la Alice in Wonderland. It generated a good discussion about the future of books and there was much agreement on the quality of Clay\'s friendships. One likened them to a band of super heroes, each with a super power.
A fun read, for book lovers and computer geeks alike. This book is not perfect, but it is an intelligent, clever, light read, which I found ver enjoyable. In addition, it does present some of the BIG QUESTIONS, so it is both thought provoking and makes for a good discussion.
Good read. Great discussion with our book club members.
The story had adventure, intrigue and was unique!I I looked forward to reading it every night and hated for it to end.
I loved this book because it surprised me at every turn. The premise was original, the characters were distinctive, and the plot was well thought out with a plausible and satisfying end. It celebrates the value of books and relationships in defining our lives, and the author's vision of the secret of immortality is completely supported by the story. Well worth a second read!
This was really fun and different from the historical novels I tend to read. I enjoyed the writing, and how the author built suspense. Characters were kind of sketchy but maybe because they were so young and hip?
Our club enjoyed the book and found several interesting topics to discuss including books vs technology. Also why do people write books? Most everyone enjoyed the book and the author\\\'s obvious love of books.
This was just a quick and easy, no stress and no pressure read. Everyone who attended felt pretty much the same. The book's premise had just the right sense of fun and adventure, a little bit of mystery and devil may care sort of attitude. I enjoyed reading about San Francisco and anything about a bookstore can draw me in, even if it's on a lark.
Group felt it was fun with a great story and interesting characters!
I did not finish this book, I could not get interested in the story line. I found it unbelievable. Many people in the book group did enjoy the book although most found the ending unsatisfactory.
This book is a little hard to get into for those who aren't techy but it is interesting. The solution is a bit anti-climactic.
Truly enjoyed this book about a different kind of bookstore. Ari Fliakos provided an awesome performance on the audiobook. This book is funny & smart. It's bookstore meets mystery codes, meets secret group, meets technology.
Not really my literary â??cup of teaâ??? (fantasy fiction which this seems strongly grounded in, is something I would never choose to pick up) but still I was able to admire its good storytelling qualities and, at least for me, novelty. It was a clever conceit the mixing of the old manuscripts with new technology. It kept me entertained, it was a very fast, easy read but I would never pick it up again.
The writing was nothing special at all and at times I felt as if I were reading Young Adult Fiction. I liked the characters for the most part and I liked the way that characters from disparate backgrounds fit together like pieces of a puzzle and could respect each other and work collaboratively. Having said that, they were not well fleshed out and each one was a stereotype: Clay the unambitious fantasy fiction/computer geek, Neel the East Indian computer nerd, Kat the super bright but emotionally blunted ambitious young beauty, Penumbra the doddering intellectual kindly old man, etc, etc.
Did not really understand the solving of the first puzzle and the creation of The Face. Lots of things in this book that you had to suspend your disbelief for and just keep going or you would have been totally bogged down. The cardboard book scanner set up. Really?
