I chose this book initially because I find the perfume industry a fascinating subject , and wanted to find out more about the selection and process a chosen scent goes through from start to finish. However this was not the case, these details were briefly mentioned towards the end of the book. The characters of Eva, Grace and Madame Zed could have been written in a much stronger way. I liked the way each chapter jumped between New York & Paris.
An easy read that would make a good \"Girls night in\" movie!
This book runs two stories from different time periods (20s and 50s) at the same time. At times it is a little hard to keep everyone straight. But the book handles a topic (perfume) in a different city (Paris) with an interesting plot. All the members of our club liked the book, with one member absolutely loving it. It ends on an upbeat note and is an interesting read. We recommend it to other book clubs.
I learned about the art of creating \'scent\' and it provided a good character study for discussion
This author writes well and she weaves a great story. You really feel like you are right alongside the characters in the 1920's and the 1950's! An enjoyable story and learning about the Perfume business makes this a great read!
Eva leaves her inheritance to her daughter, Grace. At the time Grace gets the inheritance she doesn't know Eva is her mother. The chapters go from Eva's life to Grace's and sometimes I found it hard to follow who I was reading about.
This book was enjoyed by our book club.
Our group loved the book. Couldn't believe it wasn't on any best seller lists! Compelling story.
We each brought a sample (cotton ball sprayed with our favorite perfume in a baggie) to share. The book was very good-will keep it and reread later.
Nice book choice for a summer read. Good character development for the most part, though there were a few holes. We enjoyed sampling our discussion leader\\\'s vintage perfume collection.
A story of choices. Some choices were made for the characters and others were within their power. How they handled what they were given directs the rest of their life and the lives of others.
While not a favorite book, it was enjoyable and the characters were interesting. I enjoyed the writing style, switching between time periods and finding out about different characters.
Our club unanimously loved this book...well written, fun and intriguing characters, strong women, and romance...all a backdrop to a story about women achieving independence and the freedom to choose...in Paris, with perfume as a main character.
I love the strong characters of the women. Going back and forth from the 1020’s to the current time made the book interesting to me. I’ll bring this book up to our book club for a future selection.
