I haven’t read much of pioneering Canadians but this seemed a good entry. The author captured the majesty of the landscape and the terrible hardships suffered by those who came. I couldn’t escape my internal narrative that these would become the oppressors of the Indigenous peoples but this book only touches on the early days where settlers were helped by the Indigenous peoples and learned from them. It’s a good read and I enjoyed it thoroughly.
