I easily entered into the world of Leo Hoffman and followed the twists of his life, waiting to turn the page to determine what his choice would be. How often we are confronted with choices in our own lives and although we think we have made the best choice at the time, events transpire that lead us to believe otherwise. And so it happens in Leo's life. From the unexpected death of his foster mother, his gullible participation in a counterfieting scheme to is escape to Shanghai, Leo struggles to maintain honesty in his dealings and love of his wife.

Our book club enjoyed discussing this book with the author personally! She did extensive research to make the book historically accurate. I knew little about this particular part of history and loved her descriptions of events.
