"This book took me back to my early days growing up in Indiana" by jlcesmsrd (see profile) 09/20/08

This is an easy book to read, filled with warm memories of the 70's and growing up in Indiana. There are some graghic descriptions of farm life so weak stomachs may not enjoy this book. This was choosen by my book club to read and frankly I would not have read it otherwise but that is what book clubs are all about.

"A poor farm boy spends the summer learning about life when his family goes through hardships." by hokiegirl (see profile) 09/27/08

Set in rural Indiana a young boy tells the story of the summer he learned about really being a family and all the messy and often sad things that happen in family life. But the story is joyful in the love the family has and how they rally to care for one another. Our book club chose this book because we live near the setting of this novel. It was interesting to explore what farm life was/is like. This book has lots of great themes for group discussion...poor judgement, medical issues, feeling outcast, protecting our families, just to name a few.
