"Is She Real or Not?!" by MarlaTapper (see profile) 04/29/16

I would have liked this book much better if I knew whether or not Faina is real. That's all I can say.

A childless couple in early 1900 Alaska. On evening after the first snowfall of the year they build a snow girl which somehow comes to life (if you believe that). It's s story of love, hardships, new friends and a little magic. Our club had such fun discussing this book. Lots of interesting concepts as to was she real or not.

laska, 1920: a brutal place to homestead and especially tough for recent arrivals Jack and Mabel. Childless, they are drifting apart--he breaking under the weight of the work of the farm, she crumbling from loneliness and despair. In a moment of levity during the season's first snowfall, they build a child out of snow. The next morning, the snow child is gone--but they glimpse a young, blonde-haired girl running through the trees. This little girl, who calls herself Faina, seems to be a child of the woods. She hunts with a red fox at her side, skims lightly across the snow, and somehow survives alone in the Alaskan wilderness. As Jack and Mabel struggle to understand this child who could have stepped from the pages of a fairy tale, they come to love her as their own daughter. But in this beautiful, violent place things are rarely as they appear, and what they eventually learn about Faina will transform all of them.
I did like this book - just not as enthralled with it as many of the other reviewers are. You have to know its basically a fairy tale type of story therefore do not be surprised if the ending doesn't make sense. But basically a good read.

"Snow Child gave us lots to talk about!" by barblibrarian (see profile) 11/15/16

Snow Child is based on an old folk tale. Because of this, you have the sense of a Greek tragedy - you can see it coming from the very beginning of the book. And, yet, the book is about living life to its fullest. The writing is beautiful and you have this sense of joy with a background of inevitability. This is definitely a story that allows for a lot of questioning and discussion.

This is a beautiful story that takes place in the 1920's in Alaska. The author based this book on an old Russian fairytale about a childless couple who builds a snow child, and she comes to life. The author takes us on a journey through the wilderness of Alaska and you can actually feel how cold it is while reading the story. This book is about life and love, challenges and losses, hope and loyalty. I really liked it!

Magical realism is my new favorite genre.

It's important to see this one through to the end. Great story of how difficult adjusting to new environments can be. And the healing that can happen when you love and allow others to love you. Characters are deep and masterfully woven into the landscape of wild Alaska!

The end will leave you unsure of the truth but you will feel satisfied in the not knowing!! This author does an absolutely fantastic job for a debut novel!

For those who care, nothing graphic, no profanity.
