I personally thought this book was great and I enjoyed reading most of it. It's an interesting experiment and, although I'm glad I didn't have to do it, I'm glad the authors did! It got me thinking about how my family eats and where my food comes from. Some others in our club didn't like the book at all, saw it as overly political and didn't agree with the authors so there was lively discussion. In all, we had a very good discussion and got to know each other much better.
I thought this was an entertaining read. It is great for discussion especially during this "green" movement. It brought about many topics for discussion. I felt as though we could have continued discussing for several more hours. Personally, I am part of a CSA and frequently shop at the Farmer's Market so it intrigued me from the start. I would highly recommend this book to clubs wanting to read non-fiction and current books. I think we all thought a little more of our food and it's origins and the changes we may make through reading it.
I expected a dry accounting of why or how to eat locally but it was much more interesting than that. This book stimulated a good discussion in our group. Issues raised in the book include: the environment, global economy, effects of industrialization and imperialism, the impact or lack of impact one person can have, modern "disconnectedness" with each other and the earth, and the role that food has to play in it all.
