"A sometimes humourous, sometimes serious memoir" by kristorr (see profile) 08/21/07

We all agreed that, while there were a number of humorous stories that Mr. Sedaris recounted from his childhood and experiences in France, there were also many essays in which he may have mocked or made fun of people and/or situations that were inappropriate and not very funny. At times it was hard to tell if he was recounting a dysfunctional childhood, or simply reliving memories of his past that he thought others could relate to.

It was an easy read, but there wasn't a lot to discuss.

"Not sure that people would like to discuss this book." by cam21girl (see profile) 07/10/08

This book had it's funny moments. It was interesting. We did not get what we expected. We did not know that it was a collection of short stories. It is hard to discuss a book when it doesn't have a plot or consistent characters. So if you guys are looking for a break from a regular book, then go ahead. Oh yeah. And keep an open mind, some stories do not contribute to the flow of the rest of the story.

"good book. but not a "book club" kinda book, you know what i mean." by elizabeth.bennet (see profile) 07/10/08

"Although entertaining, this book does not make for a good book group discussion." by Kimby (see profile) 11/20/08

"One boy's life experiences." by greymare (see profile) 01/15/09

Many hearty laughs and some serious discussion.

"Very Funny - But Not a Good Book Club Discussion Book" by Pam Jones (see profile) 03/24/11

I rated this book "2 stars" to make it clear that this book should NOT be chosen as a book for club discussion. David Sedaris is a brilliant humorous writer. Is essays were often laugh-out-loud funny. However, my book club tends to want something a little meatier for discussion. There just wasn't that much to discuss. Our recommendation is to read a few of his essays on your own for the pleasure of it but pick something else for your club.

"An Individual Read" by acesmom (see profile) 06/18/11

Not for book club....but as an individual reading for "Fun"...I got it! FUN!

"Laugh out loud Funny" by MLT88 (see profile) 10/16/11

This book was hilariously funny- everyone enjoyed reading it. However, all agreed that it left no room for good discussion beyond recounting which stories made us laugh the hardest.

The stories were fun. I got stuck wondering what was fact and what was hyperbole. My first Sedaris read.
