Pet features a diverse cast. At its center is a Black trans girl (though that she is trans is not the focus of the story) who is selectively verbal and uses sign language frequently named Jam. Her best friend's parents are in a polyamorous relationship. The cast is entirely Black.
They live in a utopian society where government "Angels" have gotten rid of all the "Monsters" that were the reason society was cruel and horrible in the past. However, one day a monster emerges from Jam's mother's painting claiming to be on the hunt for another monster. Soon Jam learns that things aren't always what they seem.
The book delves into themes of family, communication, friendship, and bravery. Then it pushes the reader further and gets them thinking about justice and what that means and dares them to start questioning society they've been raised in.
A well-crafted YA book that is brilliant and creative! I definitely recommend it!
