Excellent story telling by Goodman.

"Interesting book but with a weak ending" by maril (see profile) 11/12/08

The description of the lake, a major character in the book, is well written and you can feel the cold air and hear the lake sad or terrified or threatening. Going back and forth between the present and twenty years ago you are involved in the story or the myth of the school and the lake. Unfortunately, it is like the author got bored or hurried at the end and tacked on an ending that was not worthy of the rest of the story. Seemed hurried and an afterthought. Overall a satisfactory read for the most part.

"Suspenseful, twisted, coming of age, engaging" by marshcs (see profile) 11/12/08

My book club read this in Nov 2008 and we all enjoyed it although admitted that it was somewhat twisted! LOL... I liked that the book flipped back and forth between today and the past. And I liked that the "whole story" unfolded over time; it kept me reading. Overall, a very different book that I'm not sure I would have read if we hadn't picked it for book club.

I found it extremely difficult to get into. Halfway through the book it became interesting and by the end I couldn't wait to find out all the secrets.

"Keep reading..." by meye0797 (see profile) 05/23/11

This book is great once you get beyond the first section - the characters are well developed and the mystery is captivating, but able to be solved if you're paying attention. The discussion points raised by the book also make for great book club conversations.
