"Short stories about women in a single family in upstate NY from 1900-1999" by StephanieMars (see profile) 07/16/08

I just finished this book (bought from Amazon) and can't wait for everybody else to read it so we can talk about this amazing collection. Fulton is a big-time poet, and one of my favorites (which is why I ordered her book as soon as I heard about it.) It turns out that she is also a wonderful writer of fictional prose. The ten stories in the book are about the women of s single Irish-American family over a century, each story being set in a different decade. The flow is from one to ninety-nine, from birth to death.
Men play a role in the stories but they always seem like outsiders (or tormentors) and it is the women, these wonderfully complex women, that hold our (the author and the reader) interest. I found my favorites were the really funny tales, which tend to be in the more modern stories. There are some really well done tragic ones, too.
If you like really well-written stories, with rich language and genuine people, you will like this book.
