Beautifully written. Led to an interesting discussion
I wished it would have kept my attention longer. It was a struggle to make it through to the end. If I didn't have time at the airport or on a plane, I may not have finished it. It was very well written. Charity reminds me too much of my MIL - not a good thing.
Had to force myself to get through. It was somewhat slow, but overall I did like it. It was "ok". Not my most favorite book.
I loved the interpersonal dynamics. The tension between friends and couples was well-written. The author thoughtfully gentle on each human's failings, allowing each to be themselves with slight criticism but with the reality that we're human and we're all a pain in the you-know-what sometimes.
Larry and Sally Morgan. Sid and Charity Lang. One couple from the west, poor and hardworking. The other from the east and rich. Larry and Sid happen to work together at a university in Wisconsin; their wives strike up a friendship, the Morgans are invited over for a party and the rest, as they say, is history.
This is essentially the story of an unlikely friendship between four people, sometimes held together by a shoestring, memories, and the force of Charity's personality, but always dear to all. These are rich characters, likable and maddening, and so completely real. The narrative descriptions are pitch-perfect word pictures that made me wish I could write that (seemingly) effortlessly, and what isn't said is as important as what is.
So wonderfully written, delightful to read You fall in love with the characters and their plight. It takes you back to nature and simpler pleasures. A true joy to read!
I would only recommend it to the intellectual set. I didn't like it.
This is an excellent book for a book discussion group. Though a quiet read which takes place in the course of one day; it is so beautifully written and presents the reader with so much to think about the lack of a fast moving plot goes unnoticed.
Friendship is the strongest theme in this book, but it is also about love and the unexpected set backs two couples face and how they carry on.
Our book group had a great discussion and all felt the book was beautifully written and insightful. Many loved the book, others were in the like category. No one was disparaging of the book.
This book was like a breath of fresh air... it was so simple but beautifully written and a joy to read. Some of our book club struggled with it though - it is a classic.
This book, can jump fromac time to time. As a whole the characters are likable and the shared experiences in site full. I will need someone to explain the ending to me though. Anyone, anyone?
This book did not spark a good discussion at Book Club. Some members hadn't finished it. There was no real excitement about the book.
Enjoyed this sooo much more than Steigner’s Pulitzer winning Angle of Repose. Crossing to Safety is the relatively straightforward story of the depth and richness of friendship between two couples, until death does them part.
