The two books that A Disturbing Nature reminded me most of were To Kill a Mockingbird and Mystic River. However, after revisiting Mystic River again recently, I can say A Disturbing Nature is entirely in its own league.
A Disturbing Nature and Mystic River both have a similar pace. You get the backgrounds of different characters, and how they got to be where they are. You have a list of suspects later on that get weeded out. And toward the last third of the book, things really pick up and you can't put the book down.
However, Mystic River, unlike A Disturbing Nature, is not part of a series. And in that way, the ending felt cheap and rushed. In A Disturbing Nature, many more complex questions are left and it shows the author is taking his time to further unravel this story. I look forward to reading the next book in the series to get answers to the many lingering questions I have left.
