"The book mixes historical facts and fiction to make a wonderful story of how a 15-year old girl meets the challenges of womanhood." by pwaligora (see profile) 03/03/09

At the beginning of the new century, 1900, a 15-year old girl leaves her beautiful home on St. Helena's Island, South Crolina and moves to Brooklyn New York to be the wife of a silk merchant. This is both scary and exciting for Rose Frampton especially since she has only known her new husband for a brief time.

This is a beautiful, romantic story that provides a glimpse into the lives of the Gullah people of the South Carolina Islands as well as New York at the turn of the century. Rose meets the challenge of her new life and discovers that true happines depends on what she could do for herself instead of depending on others.
