"The story of a young girl captured into slavery and her unique journey" by czwadlington (see profile) 03/28/08

Exceptionally good book! It was serious reading, but very valuable history-wise. I'm glad we read this.

"Words can not express how perfect this novel is...A MUST READ" by doodlebugsmom (see profile) 08/15/08

This book although intense and wrenching at time uses the most powerful and beautiful prose to transport the reader back in time to the 18th and 19th century slave trade. This book is classic history through fiction; clearly researched well and the narrative so artfully and perfectly written that I could not put down the book. The lead character will inspire you. This book is breathtaking. This book is the best I have read in the past five years!

"Great Story -- Must Read!" by gmmoreno (see profile) 12/29/09

A compelling story of a woman's journey through life which begins as a young african girl stolen from her homeland and brought to America as a slave. Great story!

"Fabulous read! What was it like to be captured into slavery?" by litimberlake (see profile) 07/09/10

I honestly wouldn't have selected this book on my own. But it was enthralling and educational. This book is written from the eyes of a young girl taken from her tribe in Africa and sold into slavery. It's her entire life story. She is amazing and inspiring. The idea of slavery has always angered me. How could people have done this? These people were treated horribly - worse than animals. Read it - you won't be disappointed!

One of the best books I have read. Totally captivating and I couldn't put it down. Draws you in from the beginning and doesn't let go. I loved it and want everyone to read it!!

"Compelling account of slave life in 1700s" by quinby2 (see profile) 10/26/10

This is a story of the slave trade and life for the slaves as told by one woman who was stolen and sold into slavery at the age of 11. It puts a human face on the brutality and cruelty, as well as the ability of one girl/woman to survive. Our group enjoyed learning more of the period, particularly the relocation of loyalist slaves to Nova Scotia and, later, to Sierra Leone.

"A heroine you won't forget!" by [email protected] (see profile) 12/14/10

Aminata is a character in books that will long be remembered. The author did a brilliant job of creating a story that evolved around this female slave. Her resiliency is to be admired.

This was an amazing book about the business of slaves from abduction to freedom and all that passes in between. What an awful travesty to God's children.

"A MUST READ!!!" by FriendshipSisters (see profile) 10/17/11

The original title of "Someone Knows My Name" was "The Book of Negroes", a historical fiction novel. I absolutely loved this book and appreciated Mr. Hill's dedication to detail and historical fact. I truly believe that Aminata and her story, will always have a special place in my heart. Slavery is wrong on every level and the story of African slaves must be told time and time again so history does not repeat itself. This novel is a must read and I pray that it touches you as much as it has me.

"The Dark Continent" by lollygil (see profile) 10/18/11

I found the historic story of the African culture very interesting and learned a lot I did not know. It was an enlightening look into their lifestyles and ideals.Who knew they themselves owned slaves and were slave traders?

"The Indomitable Spirit" by CaribeAzul (see profile) 10/22/11

This book should be required reading for all. It is the epic story of survival, and the indomitable spirit of a girl who has been captured into slavery, and manages to thrive in the worst of conditions. It makes you question how people were able to justify the unfair treatment of the Native, and African Americans. It reminds me of a quote by Joseph Conrad, "The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary. Men alone are quite capable of every wickedness."

"Identity and Belonging" by CaribeAzul (see profile) 12/07/11

This beautifully written book is not to be missed. Hill writes from a woman's perspective about identity and belonging. Based on The Book of Negroes, it is the story of a little girl stolen from her family and her native land, and taken as a slave to the United States

"Interesting reading" by robiot6 (see profile) 09/22/13

A long reading - sometimes too long - which gets you to deep dive in the history of slave trade. Well researched and informative, still a good narrative to keep you going.

"Someone Knows My Name" by bmullinax (see profile) 09/16/14

A well-written, well-researched account of slave trading from Africa, to America, to Canada, to England. I loved being educated by this story but also having a wonderful \"chunk of meat\" to the life and times of Meena. It was a \"can not put down\" type of book!
