"A great story but not an effortless read." by JLSullivan (see profile) 01/10/08

I enjoyed this book tremendously. It provided insight in to the historical time period of the French Revolution and a different and more sympathetic perspective of Marie Antoinette than what I had before reading this book. The story was written in an intimate style, diary and letters, and gave the ultimate impression that Marie Antoinette was misunderstood by the French and historically. My only reservation about recommending this book whole heartedly is the length of the book and at times it was slow moving but definitely worth the time.

I have just started the book but find it to be a very good review of the history of this period.

"Abundance tugs at you emotionally..." by mllyons67 (see profile) 08/07/08

Strong character building combined with historical perspective equals smooth, interesting read. We all know how this ends, but catch ourselves wishing for some sort of saving grace for the innocent, and ignorant, Antoinette.

"Well Done!" by cin0107 (see profile) 09/15/08

I loved the details of this novel. Sena Jeter Naslund makes one feel that they are experiencing this first hand. The story itself is difficult, but masterfully told.

"Complete and concise" by mjmstar (see profile) 10/01/08

We enjoyed the fact that the author did not deviate from the truth and did in fact portray Marie Antoinette with truth and clarity.

As a consquence several members have done alternate research regarding Marie and we have continued to discuss the book.

"I was disappointed in this book." by chrissie60ca (see profile) 02/19/09

After reading Ahab's Wife by Sena Jeter Naslund I was really excited to get into this one but it just didn't do it for me! I found it long and tedious and I didn't think she developed her characters as much as in Ahab's Wife. A couple of our book club members enjoyed it though and it was ok for discussion.

"abundance, a novel of marie antoinette" by clairedoll (see profile) 06/26/09

Very informative of the French Revolution from a female's (Marie's) point of few. Same social issues exist today as back then. The old adage "history repeats itself" is so true. Very well written. One member brought a vocabulary list of challenging words to our meeting for review. Went well with wine.
