This story kept me entertained from page 1 to the end! I read it over 5 years ago; can't find my copy and would love to read it again! Highly recommended!
Those are the opening words of the novel, and they hooked me immediately. This book is an adventure in itself.
A wonderful but wordy book. The size alone knocked out half of our book club members. Those of us who stuck with it will be meeting in a week to "pick it apart". Very discriptive writing.
I enjoyed her adventures and the characters - but could have left us guessing at the end instead of tying up all the loose ends.
The strength of this woman was inspiring and her adventures thrilling. This was a great read.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Didn't seem as long as it was. This historic fiction gave a lot of information that was true to the island of Nantucket and the era.
What it was like for a woman of the times.
This is a beautifully written tale that captivated me right away--It has one of the all-time great first lines in literature. For those who appreciated Moby Dick, this is a vivid reimagining of the other side. Sena Naslund is a brilliant, audacious feminist. There's a lot to discuss here.
Ahab's Wife predominately takes place on the coast of Nantucket in the hey-day of the whaling industry, and a chilly mist seems to curl off of each page. Naslund is truly one of those authors that takes you away into her world, and you go willingly because it's such a good tale. Although there are a few threads of the storyline that seem to have no place in the whole scope of the book (maybe the author couldn't forsake her own opinions for the sake of a well-rounded plot?) the overall feeling of the book more than makes up for it. If you enjoy being swept away completely, this is a book to get lost in.
