"Hard book to follow & discuss" by dswiley (see profile) 01/14/09

There were so many stories and back and forth themes in the book that is was not enjoyable to read or to discuss. We had two members that chose not to finish the book.

The dialect was not reader friendly either. Many in the group had like other Toni Morrison titles, but not this one.

"not easy to follow" by lauragillis (see profile) 01/14/09

The book seemed to meander around and was not one to hold your interest. Most in my club did not enjoy it. Only 1 finished the book.

"HARD TO GET INTO" by CHUCKSWIFE (see profile) 02/24/09

Very hard to get into at first. However, I think it depends on the individual's taste. I agree with previous posts, the dialect is not user friendly but appropiate for the setting of the book. I think I found it a little easier because at the time I was taking a history course that covered this same period of time.I was not use to several different people telling a story. the book seemed to float around which at times was very confusing. I love other Toni Morrision novels, but this one was not one of my favorites.

"The book was hard to follow" by MonicaPJ (see profile) 02/25/09

I would recommend this book but it was so difficult to follow the avid reader would have a time keeping up. This book however, once you read and re-read to confirm, was interesting. Each person had a different status in life but in the end they were all the same. There was also some history In the pages that I was not aware happened in that century. Overall the book was a true "Morrison" perspective.

"A novel about early America when America was a fluid place of many religions, races and countries. It is the story of 5 women and their various forms of servitude." by monie (see profile) 02/27/09

A dream like novel that reveals a lot of early America and the beginnings of slavery and racism.

"A Mercy by Toni Morrison" by dchase21 (see profile) 06/27/09

Toni Morrison has written a prequel to Beloved in A Mercy. Set in 1690 America, everyone is enslaved to something or someone. Only 170 pages but with 5 major charachters and their points of view it can be confussing. I had to read it a second time in one sitting to really appreciate the specialness of this work.
