This somewhat fictionalized memoir of one Christmas is one of Capote's best-known stories. It takes place during his early childhood, when he lived with aging cousins. One cousin became his best friend and constant companion. "A Christmas Memory" tells of the fun they had making fruitcakes and Christmas presents. It also tells of their loneliness and estrangement from the rest of the household. The edition we read includes two other short stories by Capote: "One Christmas" and "A Thanksgiving Visitor." We agreed that reading all three stories completes the picture of Capote's childhood that "A Christmas Memory" begins.
A charming story of giving and receiving.
This is a wonderful story to enjoy, year, after year! Truman's prose is amazing. Once you start to read him, you are hooked. Don't be afraid of IN COLD BLOOD, because of the subject matter. Very well written, and an amazing story. I find it very interesting that he and Harper Lee were childhood friends, and she was involved in his investigation into the book.
This book is not like that story at all. It's a heartfelt story of a young boy,and his relationship with a grandmother type figure, and making fruitcakes. Celeste Holms is wonderful on the Cd included with the book. Purchase it as part of your Christmas book library, make a hot cup of chocolate, snuggle under a warm blanket, stick in the Cd,and enjoy the story, and the beautiful illustrations in this book!
It was a sad story that made me appreciate the Christmas Memories I can give my children.
This heart warming short story is beautifully written and hooked me onto more of Truman Capote's works. This selection is ideal for a December book selection due to content and brevity.
