Ms. Everson brought the Deep South alive in this novel. The characters got into my head, broadened my perspective, broke my heart. I love that she didn't torture her characters throughout the book, that she allowed them to be real people with realistic problems, solving them the best way they could, rather than stewing in their own miserable juices through the entire book. Very well done.
