This is a particularly well written novel which captures a great sense of adventure and champions a protagonist of strong moral fibre yet human flaws. Amongst the high seas action there are some acutely villainous characters balanced well by the honourable and everything in between. The historical context provides a very interesting background, which is fascinating in explaining international grievances which simmer to this day.

The elegant use of English (enigmatic of the author's Iberian name) is remarkable, especially combined with the manner of speech of the time of writing and also the chronological setting of the tale. The exchanges between the great rivalries are particularly enjoyable.

I had fun reading this book. The writing style is definitely dated, and it took a bit of adjusting, but the author's wordiness actually painted a fairly detailed image of the times, and the thoughts of the protagonist.

I didn't like Peter Blood at the start, he seemed to self-confident- cocky, arrogant, sort of know-it-all- but as he found himself in new situations, the character expanded and revealed flaws so that readers could empathise.
