Our club enjoyed the book. It created a lively discussion of the overwhelming psychological issues created in situations like Cal's.
Whilst the book itself was a bit long in the tooth (in my opinion), the bookclub discussion was lively and informative. The discussion is the focus of our club and it was a definite winner in that respect.
This story takes you into a sad life of a boy in a time when such things were not understood or tolerated very well. There is also a good deal of history in the book which is interesting aside from the story itself.
