This book really had no mystery. It was somewhat thrilling due to the graphic nature of events & chase, but the plot was exposed very quickly and then there was just the obvious search for the killer. It was completely corny and the romance plot was unrealistic. I was rolling my eyes constantly. I had to read it for the book club's sake, but it was murder to say the least. Thank goodness it's over!
Much of the story revolved around being inside a serial killer's head. The writing was descriptive lending itself to some gruesome moments. Mental illness was a central theme and was portrayed accurately although a couple of details were questionable. Even though it is not the type of book I would typically ready, I did like the mix of crime and psychology.
I really enjoyed the story, as creepy as the murderer was. Interesting insights into the mind of people with psychological problems. I only found out after finishing the book that Ted Dekker is considered a major Christian Author. While I didn't notice anything in his writing style or story line where that was evident, I am glad I did not know it before I read the book as I would probably have not read the book as open-mindedly as I did. I did some research and found out that this book is considered a mainstream thriller which I fully agree with.
This book grabbed me from the start. I couldn't wait to get to the next chapter. Dekker's choice for villan was both graphic and frightening. Several scenes disturbed the senses and pointedly brought beliefs into question.
